Flat high performance dish

I bought a Flat high performance dish gen 2 because of where I live in the mountains I wanted to make sure I had this before they run out, I don't plan on activating it for a few months but I'm worried about being able to get updates when I do activate it.
The dish is not set up yet but I have read I could just plug it in and set it outside and it will update without a router which I don't have yet. Not sure if this information is accurate.
I'm 75 so I have to buy things when I can afford them even for future use. I did not buy from Starlink.
Would it be better if I went ahead and bought the router? If I could just update it every month that would be great.

It should be fine to sit for a few months without being updated. But if you did want to update it, just power it on outside for a few hours. It will update even without a Starlink router attached.

cbaber Thank you, I really like your videos they help a lot, I'm just waiting for the demand charge here in NC to go away and more capacity,
